 When I built my first version of this Sam Maloof inspired design, I was enamored with this rocking chair. Observing the beautifully simple and flowing lines with the flexible strength of the wood and joinery, I felt the chair reflected a gentle sense of movement, though it stood motionless in front of me. This mysterious "movement" brought to mind the symbolism of the name of the Animas River, which flows through the heart of Durango. For the Spanish, the word "animas" literally refers to "spirit", and for the ancient Greeks, the word "anemos" means "wind". The mysterious movement of wind or spirit many of us observe in the world around us, suggested to me that an appropriate moniker for this design would be "Wind Rocker", and its sister design called the "Spirit Rocker".The Wind Rocker is a pleasure to construct and is the most comfortable piece of functional art you can purchase. This chair design can be ordered with/without the 5 inch "donkey-ears" on the headrest. Armrests can be ordered with rounded or straight edged treatments. And of course, the variety of hardwood choices are available to you. Using combinations of wood species is particularly effective in this chair design, such as a cherry chair with walnut accents. |
